PLA vs PETG vs ABS — Which Material for 3D Letters?
Choosing the right material is crucial for durable and beautiful 3D-printed letters. We compare the most common filaments in detail.
Choosing the right 3D printing material is one of the most important steps when designing your custom letters. Each filament has its own strengths — here is a comprehensive overview.
PLA — The All-Rounder for Indoors
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the most popular material for decorative 3D letters. Made from renewable resources like cornstarch, it offers an exceptionally smooth surface. Print quality is excellent, even for complex fonts with fine details. PLA is ideal for wall decor, name tags, and gifts in indoor settings. However, PLA should not be exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures (above 55 °C).
PETG — Flexible and Weather-Resistant
PETG combines the ease of printing of PLA with significantly better weather resistance. The material is slightly flexible and does not break as easily as PLA. It is excellent for letters intended for both indoor and outdoor use. The surface has a slight sheen that creates a modern look. With heat resistance up to 80 °C, PETG is also suitable for sunny locations.
ABS — Durable and Post-Processable
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a very impact-resistant material that is easy to post-process. It can be sanded, painted, and smoothed with acetone vapor. ABS is ideal for letters that need to be particularly durable — such as in commercial environments or with frequent transport. However, ABS is not UV-resistant and requires a protective coating for outdoor use.
ASA — The Pro Choice for Outdoors
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the material of choice for permanent outdoor applications. It offers the same robustness as ABS but is simultaneously highly UV-resistant and weather-proof. Letters made from ASA retain their color and shape even after years outdoors.
Comparison Table
| Property | PLA | PETG | ABS | ASA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Very smooth | Slightly glossy | Matte to silk-matte | Matte |
| UV Resistance | Low | Medium | Low | High |
| Temperature (max) | 55 °C | 80 °C | 95 °C | 95 °C |
| Indoor | Excellent | Good | Good | Good |
| Outdoor | Not suitable | Suitable | With coating | Excellent |
| Post-processing | Limited | Limited | Very good | Very good |
| Eco-friendly | Yes | Partially | No | No |
Our Recommendation
For most decorative indoor projects, PLA is the best choice — it offers the smoothest surface and is eco-friendly. As soon as your letters are even occasionally exposed to the elements, we recommend PETG as the ideal compromise. For permanent outdoor signage, ASA is the premium solution.
