How to Measure the Perfect Letter Size for Your Shelf
Size is everything. Learn step by step how to measure and calculate the perfect letter size for your shelf.
Want to place your 3D letters on a shelf? Then the right size is crucial — too large and the letters overhang, too small and they get lost. With these simple steps, you will find the perfect fit.
Step 1: Measure Shelf Depth
The shelf depth determines how deep your letters can stand. Measure the available depth from the back wall to the front edge of the shelf. Subtract at least 20 mm so the letters stand stable without overhanging. Example: With a shelf depth of 250 mm, your letters should be a maximum of 230 mm deep.
Step 2: Determine Available Height
Measure the distance between the shelf surface and the shelf above or the ceiling. Subtract at least 15 mm of clearance so the letters can be easily placed and removed. With a shelf height of 300 mm, we recommend letters with a maximum height of 285 mm.
Step 3: Calculate Available Width
Measure the total available width of the shelf. Divide this by the number of letters plus spaces to find the maximum width per letter. Note: Narrow letters like "I" or "L" need less space, while wide letters like "W" or "M" require more room.
Step 4: Use the Calibration Tool
For precise preview, we recommend the Letter Paradise calibration tool. First calibrate your screen by establishing a real-world scale. This way, you will see exactly how large your letters will appear in real space in the preview.
Step 5: Account for Font Width Ratios
Not all fonts have the same proportions. A sans-serif font like Montserrat has more uniform letter widths, while a script font like Dancing Script has strongly varying letter widths. Use the live preview in the configurator to check whether all letters of your text fit within the available shelf width.
Summary
With these five steps, you will find the perfect size for your shelf letters. Start with the Letter Paradise configurator and use the calibration for 100% accurate preview. This way, your letters will turn out exactly as you envision them.
